Agave basket giveaway at Maya Moon.

Maya Moon strives to support local artisans in the community of San Pablo and encourage the regrowth of agave plants. The plant fibers are spun into a natural rope material and this highly skilled process passed down from Mayan ancestors, helps to clean Lake Atitlán.

Maya Moon is passionate about nature and fascinated by the Mayan culture in Guatemala. So when we moved to San Pablo, Lake Atitlán, and we learned the story of the how this natural alternative to synthetic rope is created by spinning agave plant fibers together, and then expertly made into traditional products such as baskets and handbags, we decided that we wanted to support the local artisans working with this unique material and to share it with you.

Therefore, we are offering twelve handmade Mayan Moon agave baskets from the heart of the Mayan culture to your hands for just cost price of £17.99 (which includes Eco postage to anywhere in the United Kingdom). We are not making a profit, but we hope to make an impact by igniting an interest for this amazing ethical material enriched in Mayan mysticism and magic.

Don Pablo is the local artisan who created the beautiful Maya Moon agave baskets by weaving the natural rope. He explains how the rope is made using the agave plants fibers. The process is complicated and includes washing the fibers in the lake, which incredibly helps to keep it clean, drying them under the scorching sun, and then at least three artisans working together with high-skill to successfully spin the plant fibers into a natural rope.

Local artist Miguel Ujpán's mural depicts how the natural rope is spun in this co-operation.

Agave plants used to grow in abundance in San Pablo, but now local farmers  often decide to grow the more profitable coffee plants instead. As a result the ancient tradition to grow agave is unfortunately diminishing. As a matter of fact, Don Pablo believes that there are now only three local families in the community that grow agave with the purpose to create and sell rope.

Along with the decline of tourism in Guatemala and the current economic struggles endured by the locals, the lack of agave plant growers in the community means that the cost of the rope has drastically increased. Consequently, the opportunity and motivation to continue to create these beautiful and unique handmade Mayan products has decreased.

So we are hoping that our customers will help us to clean Lake Atitlán, revive the growth of agave in San Pablo and this fascinating ancestral Mayan art tradition. You can do this by supporting Maya Moon and our passion for art, the environment and to advocate those with talent and without opportunity.
